Iwona Hossa is widely regarded as one of the leading sopranos of her generation, renowned for the precision, technical mastery, and exceptional versatility of her voice, as well as her remarkable clarity of tone and captivating timbre. Her vocal artistry has been admired worldwide, consistently enchanting audiences and winning critical acclaim on international stages.
She graduated with honours from the Vocal and Acting Department of the I. J. Paderewski Academy of Music in Poznań, and she collaborates regularly with numerous opera houses and symphony orchestras both in Poland and abroad. Among her many accolades, she is the winner of the prestigious Grand Prix and Gold Medal at the Maria Callas International Vocal Competition in Athens. A remarkably versatile artist, her extensive repertoire spans from early music to the most complex contemporary works.
Throughout her career, she has performed under the baton of such distinguished conductors as David Lloyd-Jones, David Agler, Maurizio Benini, Gabriel Chmura, Charles Dutoit, Gustavo Dudamel, Agnieszka Franków-Żelazny, Valery Gergiev, Kazimierz Kord, Jan Krenz, Jacek Kaspszyk, Jerzy Maksymiuk, John Neschling, Grzegorz Nowak, Krzysztof Penderecki, Jerzy Semkow, Stanisław Skrowaczewski, and Antoni Wit.
Her discography includes 28 CDs and DVDs, predominantly featuring Polish music, most of which have received prestigious recording honours – including the International Classical Music Award (ICMA) in the Contemporary Music category and the Orphée d’Or, alongside multiple nominations for the Fryderyk and Grammy Awards.
For almost twenty years, Iwona Hossa had the profound honour of collaborating closely with Professor Krzysztof Penderecki, and her repertoire encompasses the entirety of the late composer’s vocal-instrumental works. Throughout her career, she has given numerous world premieres of works by prominent Polish composers, including Penderecki, Wojciech Kilar, and Jerzy Maksymiuk. In addition to her stage career, she is an active educator and cultural manager; she was awarded a Doctor of Arts degree in 2011 and a postdoctoral degree in 2014, both from the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music (UMFC) in Warsaw. She also spent a decade leading the solo singing class at the Vocal and Acting Department of the I. J. Paderewski Academy of Music in Poznań.
Her extensive contributions to society and the arts have been recognized with several prestigious national honours: in 2015, she was awarded the Silver Cross of Merit by the President of the Republic of Poland, Andrzej Duda; in 2016, she received the Honorary Badge for Services to the Greater Poland Voivodeship as well as the Honorary Badge for Services to Polish Culture from the Minister of Culture and National Heritage, Małgorzata Omilanowska; and in 2019, she was decorated with the Gloria Artis Medal for Merit to Culture.
