Cathedral Basilica of St John the Baptist and St John the Evangelist
One of the largest Gothic churches in Poland, this Cathedral Basilica began construction in the late 13th century and took over 200 years to complete. Originally built as the parish church of Toruń’s Old Town, it has long been a spiritual and cultural centre for the region. Over the centuries, the walls of the cathedral have also become a place of prayer for the most important Polish dignitaries. Highlights of the cathedral’s history include:The baptism of Nicolaus Copernicus in 1473. The burial of King John I Albert’s heart in one of its towers.
A rich interior adorned with artistic masterpieces from various centuries, which are true gems of their eras. Several times a year, the mighty Tuba Dei bell—the “Trumpet of God”—rings out across the city. According to legend, its sound can even delay the end of the world.
